'I am delighted to be asked to judge this competition. It is very encouraging to see this initiative taken out across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. I believe that so much of the world's population thrives in the environs of Cities that we should be looking more closely at them. Quality of life as well as 'ways of being' are affected by our environment and by the standards of our employers and local business interests. I look forward to some thought provoking images. I am sure we will find fascinating common threads in places we thought of as very different'.

CHARLES GARNETT - CB Richard Ellis Urban Photographer of the Year, 2008

Charles GarnettHi All,

Charles Garnett here, also known in the photography world as as Rockshifter.

I’m from Glasgow where I am a supply teacher working for the city education department. I am a keen amateur photographer, and started , as most do, just taking snaps with my compact camera. Later I started taking photographs for use in school magazines, newspapers and school events and started using a digital SLR camera. In fact it was while teaching, I took the winning photograph of last year’s competition. I had been wandering around the school taking photographs for the school magazine when I noticed the dinner ladies preparing the lunches. They were having a bit of fun and I asked if I could take a shot for the competition – you know the rest.

You will see from the selection of images here that I enjoy shooting all genres of photography and also like to do a little processing too. I like to experiment and often take many shots of the same scene, changing angles, camera settings and even lenses. Most times I just wander around with the camera and shoot whatever I find interesting, and now and then I will go looking for a specific shot that fits a competition remit.

Hope you enjoy my gallery and have loads of fun taking your own shots.

Good hunting!
Rockshifter
